Chapter 42

Renn

Soo stared at Renn, her face blank. He tried to stare back, to match her like it was a test of strength. He couldn’t. He let his eyes drop. His plan had been a simple abstract idea, but the execution of it was more difficult than he expected. Killing Soo as a representation of what she had done was different to killing the woman who stared at him. His plan was not as clear cut when he could look into her eyes. Killing the woman wasn’t removing an obstruction; it was terrible and intimate. As Renn dropped his eyes, he doubted he could give Ahh Moss Eck the signal to shoot her from his hidden rooftop location.

Renn still hated her; he wanted her dead, but he wanted her to have already been killed, and not have to watch it happen. He didn’t want to be the direct cause of any deaths, even Soo’s. But after his eyes had dropped she again became an idea, a representation. He could kill that. He almost gave Ahh Moss Eck the signal while he wasn’t looking at her. Then she spoke, and Renn raised his eyes.

‘I’m impressed,’ Soo said. ‘And that’s not easy to do.’

Renn had contacted Soo using Kay Lee Too’s secure VPN technology.

‘My technicians told me it was exceedingly sophisticated, and even the Advisor couldn’t intercept the communications. And you said it was designed by a Tier-Three?’

Renn nodded.

‘That got my interest,’ Soo said. ‘What else can you give me?’

‘I’m not giving you anything.’

Soo smiled at him; it was an ugly thing full of motive. ‘Fair enough. What do you want, and what will you trade?’

Renn glanced at Soo’s assistant. He sat next to her at the outside table. He looked angry. Renn didn’t know why, but it could have been because they were outside in the cold. Renn huddled closer into his clothes. Tall heaters stood between most tables; they radiated warmth, but Renn’s back was to the street and the closest heater was on the far side of the table, nearer to Soo and her assistant.

Renn began to think his plan was silly. It was noble but fraught with failure. His death was the obvious result. He had not thought through the high likelihood of that happening. But now, sitting in the cold, across from the woman a simple signal would kill, he wondered about escape. Three armed security people stood close to Soo. They glanced everywhere but always shifted their eyes back to Renn like he was their reference point and the source of danger. Renn hoped that Ahh Moss Eck could kill five people before any of them retaliated. Renn glanced at other people in the cafe. Some ignored him, some averted their eyes, others returned his look, and Renn imagined malevolence in their stares. There had to be more than three security personnel guarding Soo. His hopes of survival disappeared. There was no way Ahh Moss Eck could kill everyone before he would be killed too.

He took a deep breath.
